Biathlete's Public Apology for Cheating Overshadows Olympic Win | Ex-Girlfriend Responds (2026)

"Forgiveness can be a daunting challenge," says the former girlfriend of Norwegian Olympic biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid as she reacts to his public apology for infidelity. Her response sheds light on the emotional turmoil surrounding this high-profile situation.

After Lægreid secured a bronze medal in the individual 20km event, he took it upon himself to disclose what he deemed "the hardest week of my life." He shared, "Six months ago, I encountered the love of my life—someone I consider the most beautiful and kindest person in the world. However, three months ago, I made an atrocious mistake and cheated on her, which I only confessed a week ago. This has undoubtedly been the worst week for me."

In a heartfelt letter to the Norwegian newspaper VG, the woman, who wishes to remain unnamed, expressed her struggle with the situation: "It is difficult to forgive, especially after such a public display of affection broadcasted globally. I never wanted to find myself in this position, and it’s challenging to navigate these feelings. We have communicated, and he is aware of my sentiments regarding this."

Lægreid is regarded as one of the leading figures in biathlon, having previously won a gold medal in the relay event at the Beijing Olympics and earned a total of 14 medals at world championships. Nevertheless, this recent apology has overshadowed his remarkable achievements in the sport.

His former girlfriend also extended her gratitude towards her family and friends, saying, "I appreciate all my loved ones who have supported me through this ordeal, as well as those who have thought of me and offered their sympathy, even without knowing who I am."

Furthermore, she highlighted that the day belonged to Sivert Guttorm Bakken, a fellow Norwegian biathlete who tragically passed away just before Christmas last year. "It was touching to witness how Sivert was honored in the victory celebrations," she remarked, referencing the moment when race winner Johan-Olav Botn shouted, "We did it, Sivert!" into the cameras after crossing the finish line.

Lægreid faced backlash regarding the timing of his public apology, and later that day he stated, "I deeply regret sharing this personal matter on such a joyful occasion for Norwegian biathlon. I am not thinking straight and don’t feel like myself at the moment.

"My apology is directed to Johan-Olav, who rightfully deserved the spotlight following his gold medal win. Additionally, I extend my apologies to my former girlfriend, who has been thrust into the media glare against her will. I hope she is holding up well. Unfortunately, I cannot change the past, but I wish to move forward and concentrate on the upcoming Olympics. I will refrain from making any more comments on this subject."
