Imran Khan, the Bollywood star, recently made headlines with a surprising guest appearance in the film "Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos," directed by his friend Vir Das. His decision to participate stemmed from a genuine passion for the project, coupled with a bit of FOMO, or Fear Of Missing Out. However, beyond his recent professional endeavors, Imran has opened up about his personal life, specifically addressing the challenges he faced during his marriage to Avantika Malik, which he described as increasingly "unhealthy" and detrimental to their daughter, Imara.
In a candid interview, Imran shared that while the process of separation was undoubtedly difficult, it ultimately allowed him to prioritize his well-being and become a better parent. He stated, "It is painful, but however painful the separation is… And it is painful for both partners, the child, and the families involved." He emphasized that despite the discomfort associated with divorce, it is often healthier than remaining entrenched in an unhealthy relationship dynamic. He argued, "Ultimately, it is more beneficial to part ways than to stay in a toxic environment and inadvertently teach your child to accept such patterns as normal. By doing so, you’re not presenting your best self to your child."
Imran also reflected on how the negative dynamics within his marriage were impacting his health. He explained, "Recognizing and understanding this unhealthy pattern was crucial in my decision to end my marriage. I realized it was harmful not just for me, but also for her and our child. Remaining in that unhealthy situation was simply not viable."
Today, Imran is in a supportive and healthy relationship with Lekha Washington, and he feels strongly that his choice to divorce Avantika was a necessary step for his overall health. He noted, "The validation of my decision has been overwhelming. Over the past seven years since our separation, I have seen remarkable improvements in my personal, emotional, and mental health."
Looking back at his life during the latter years of his marriage, Imran remarked, "When I view photographs from that period, I see someone who appears seriously unwell. Ultimately, this change has been for the better."
Imran and Avantika, who were college friends before tying the knot on January 10, 2011, welcomed their daughter Imara on June 9, 2014, but the couple decided to part ways in 2019.
