Ferrell's character, Lonnie 'The Hawk' Hawkins, is a textbook Ferrell type: selfish, shameless, and oblivious to the impact of his actions on others. However, the show fails to give the character the edge and depth that would make him truly memorable. Instead, it feels like a half-baked, softened version of a Danny McBride protagonist, which is a disappointment given the creative team's close association with Ferrell.
One of the biggest problems with 'The Hawk' is its lack of narrative momentum. The inciting incident, the death of Hawk's longtime caddy, feels like a mere blip, and the show fails to build upon it. The show also struggles to explain the fundamentals of professional golf, leaving viewers like me lost and confused. The characters, particularly the female ones, lack dimension and feel like mere props in the story.

The show's interests are theoretically in a nuclear family gradually coming back together, but even this theme is halfheartedly pursued. The show's focus on Ferrell's glorification above all else makes it feel random and uninspired.
In my view, 'The Hawk' is a missed opportunity. It fails to live up to the potential of its premise and the anticipation built up by fans. It's a show that feels like a mere shadow of its former self, and I can't help but feel disappointed by its lack of depth and edge. Perhaps it's time for Ferrell to move on and explore new creative avenues, as his classic work has already left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.
